The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the ethanolic crude extracts and fractions of the species Senecio westermanii Dusén on Lactuca sativa L. (lettuce) and Allium cepa L. (onion) seeds. We assessed the germination, growth, root respiration and photosynthesis of the target species in Petri dishes (9.0 cm diameter) containing filter paper n°6. The study was conducted using 50 seeds per plate and held in 4 replicates per concentration of each sample. In the germination there was an inhibitory effect of fractions hexane (FH) and chloroform (FCl) at concentrations of 500 and 1000 µg/mL. N-nitroso compounds, such as N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA), can be formed by the reaction of secundary amines with nitrosating agents, and are suspected to be involved in tumors in humans. NDEA has been considered a weak carcinogen in genotoxic assays probably due to the inefficient nitrosamine activation system that is used and/or to the efficient repair system. International research on vegetable seed vigor is not at the same level attained for grain crops species. This study was conducted to identify reliable procedures for the accelerated aging and controlled deterioration tests to rank onion (Allium cepa L.) seed lots according to their physiological potential. Six seed lots of the cultivars Aurora and Petroline were evaluated in the laboratory for germination, first count, seedling vigor classification, traditional and saturated salt accelerated aging (41ºC / 48 and 72 h), controlled deterioration (24% of water / 45ºC / 24 h) and seedling emergence tests. Environmental degradation caused by the excessive use of pesticides has motivated studies aimed at the discovery of new formulations for pest control. The bioassays carried out under laboratory conditions for the present study involved the germination and seedling growth of Lactuca sativa cv. Grand Rapids and Allium cepa cv. Baia Periforme treated with lecanoric acid or one of seven esters obtained from the alcoholysis of the acid. Each substance was tested at concentrations of 10-3, 10-5, 10-7 M, and 10-9 M. In this study we evaluated the action of crude aqueous extracts obtained from rhytidome of Hymenaea stigonocarpa (jatobá-do-cerrado) on Allium cepa meristematic root cells in three concentrations: 0.082, 0.164, 0.328g/mL, at exposure times of 24 and 48 h. The slides were prepared by the crushing technique, and cells analyzed throughout the cell cycle, totaling 5000 for each control group and concentration. It was found that all three concentrations, including the lowest which is considered ideal for use, in all exposure times, had significant antiproliferative action on the cell cycle of this test system. ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the antiproliferative, cytotoxic and genotoxic potential of salty liquid synthetic flavorings of Butter, Cheddar Cheese and Onion. The antiproliferative potential (2.9-1500 µg/mL) was assessed by MTT assay after 72h using the human tumor lines SF-295 (glioblastoma), OVCAR-8 (ovarian), HCT-116 (colon) and HL-60 (promyelocytic leukemia) and primary cultures of murine Sarcoma 180 (S180) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Avaliou-se substâncias alternativas no manejo de tripes (Thrips tabaci Lind.), em cebola, cv, Crioula, no sistema orgânico. Os experimentos foram conduzidos na EPAGRI, Ituporanga (SC). Os períodos entre transplante e colheita foram de 11/09/1996 a 10/01/1997 e 13/08/1997 a 11/12/1997. A antracnose foliar causada por Colletotrichum gloeosporioides é a doença mais importante da cebolicultura (Allium cepae) em Guidoval e Guiricema, MG. Para controle da doença, utilizam-se intensivamente fungicidas, principalmente benomil (Ben), o que tem sido pouco efetivo. Neste trabalho, testou-se a hipótese da existência de isolados de C. gloeosporioides resistentes ao Ben e se comparou a eficiência de diferentes fungicidas no controle do patógeno. Nas concentrações testadas, Ben impediu o crescimento micelial do fungo, e a germinação de conídios decresceu com o aumento da concentração do produto. Neste trabalho foi avaliado o desempenho produtivo de genótipos de cebola no Semi-Árido Nordestino. Foram conduzidos, simultaneamente, experimentos em três locais (Mossoró-RN, Petrolina-PE e Juazeiro-BA), de maio a setembro de 2004. Os delineamentos foram em blocos completos casualizados, com três repetições. O cultivo da cebola representa uma necessidade para o Acre, uma vez que o Estado se abastece com o produto importado, sendo ofertado a preço elevados ao consumidor. Além da importação, as quantidades recebidas são inferiores à demanda, havendo sempre um déficit no mercado. Em busca de uma solução, a Embrapa, através da UEPAE/Rio Branco, desenvolve trabalhos de introdução de cultivares da cebola, melhoradas pelo Instituto de Pesquisas Agronômicas de Pernambuco (IPA). Ele tem o objetivo principal de verificar a viabilidade técnica de produzir cebola no Acre. Entre as cultivares testadas (IPA-1, IPA-2, IPA-3, IPA-4 e IPA-5), observaram-se diferenças de produção nas distintas épocas de plantio. |

A variabilidade existente para caracteres de produção associados à resistência a Thrips tabaci (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) foi estimada em 62 progênies de meios irmãos da cv. de cebola ValeOuro IPA-11. As testemunhas foram as cvs. ValeOuro IPA-11 e os seus genitores Roxa IPA-3 e Belém IPA-9. O experimento foi conduzido em condições de campo, em Juazeiro (BA), utilizando delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com três repetições, 65 tratamentos.
